In this special edition dedicated to the Learning Disability Week, we delve into the world of managing accommodation for individuals with disabilities and learning differences. One of our customers, Malcolm, joins the podcast to share his and his son’s story. We're also joined by David Abbey from My Safe Home, who explains how the government benefit system works and how home ownership can be made possible for disabled individuals.Calum has lived with learning disabilities and autism since birth, which means he faces challenges with traditional employment. While the conventional approach often involves placing individuals in specialised institutions, his father decided to find a Shared Ownership home for his son, with a dedicated support worker. Thanks to this arrangement, Calum has been able to reduce his stress levels, which has helped ease his mental health difficulties, and make great progress—such as making independent decisions, choosing his own lifestyle, and setting his own pace for daily living.Malcolm was also able to obtain a specialist mortgage—an option that remains little-known even among professionals and experts. Reworking government benefits to make Shared Ownership affordable and, most importantly, sustainable is something that can last virtually forever, even when Calum’s parents are no longer able to provide support. We'll talk through it all in this episode: how to arrange private accommodation and home ownership for disabled individuals, applying for specialist mortgages, the HOLD scheme, and much more. If you’re currently supporting someone with additional needs, we really encourage listening to this episode until the end.----SO In The Know is BACK!
