Have you ever wondered what truly matters when time grows short—and how to welcome the present, however uncertain?

In this powerful episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I reconnect with my dear friend Rachel Furman from Los Angeles. Rachel joins me in the final weeks of her life to speak openly about facing the end with calm, courage, and acceptance. Her refusal to equate pain with suffering stands out: “Suffering is optional.” Through a deep acceptance of her circumstances and a focus on what’s possible each day, Rachel offers a model for resilience and grace.

Rachel shares how she turned her final years into opportunities for adventure – traveling, dancing, focusing on what brings her joy, and maintaining her independence and humour in her relationships, even with her medical team. Her wisdom about acceptance and letting go shines: “We are not in control of most things, but the less we resist, the easier it becomes.”

Rachel’s wish is that her story might help even one person. She reminds us, “As long as you’re here, have fun, love, enjoy… there’s no reason to be upset about stuff.”

What allows you to find peace or joy, despite difficult circumstances?

Let us know your reflections.
