How to Create a Legacy
In my recent discussion with Harriet Corvine on Women’s Perspective (Substack) about the subject of Success for women, prompted me to look closer at my personal goals for success, combined with the desire to create a legacy for the women who come after me. Those who I hope will rise as strong women.
I have wondered how I can help ensure they can.
My perspective and what I truly believe, perhaps because I’ve witnessed it from the lives of women who lived before me, my ancestors who left legacies for me. I believe that each generation of both men and women, from both my paternal and maternal heritage, has strived to make improvements for the next generation. That they did this personal legacy work in their times, or era, of humanity’s progress, which offered them the ability to take small steps toward that change. I think these efforts were both conscious and subconscious in execution, but the effect is like the movement of those clicking balls of perpetual motion or Newton’s Cradle.
Recently, I have realized a failing on my part. The timeline is slipping, so to speak. My window of opportunity is warping, bending toward collapse under the weight and wonder of whether I will make an effective change for my descendants. I once thought that being a decent human being is good enough to leave a legacy that would help them. It certainly doesn’t hurt, but it isn’t enough. The reason is that my era is different than that of my mother and grandmother’s. Not so much that it is special, but this is a time of greater opportunity for possibilities. In our current time, we can have an impact that affects more than just our close family, where most of our ancestors were limited. In these times, we can become ordinary heroes, reaching beyond boundaries of distance and also accessibility limits. We are free to share our vision and message to rising generations halfway around the world, no matter their environment or circumstances. Whether they are poor, blind, deaf, or don’t speak our language...
