Whitney Barner, stops by Wait A Gam Minute Podcast studio to share her remarkable story of resilience and advocacy after being diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer.
In 2024, Whitney's primary care physician diagnosed her with a tumor in her ear canal, but dismissed it as non-cancerous. Despite persistent headaches and ear aches, Whitney felt something was amiss. Three months later, she sought a second opinion at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), where a biopsy revealed the devastating news: she had Stage 4 Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the External Auditory Ear Canal.
This rare and aggressive cancer required chemo, radiation and surgery. Whitney underwent a 13-hour procedure that resulted in the removal of her left ear and paralysis on the left side of her face.
Throughout her ordeal, Whitney remained determined to advocate for herself. She sought multiple opinions and trusted her instincts when she felt something was wrong. Her journey should inspire others to pay attention to their bodies and to seek a second opinion when necessary.
"I'm grateful for the support of my family and friends," said Whitney.
Whitney's story is a testament to the importance of early detection and advocacy. She continues to recover and patiently awaits to see what the future holds. Her resilience and determination serve as a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenge
