One of the leading theories as to why there was a massive power outage in Portugal and Spain recently is a phenomenon called “induced atmospheric vibration. This was apparently caused by intense temperature variations in the interior of Spain which led to anomalous oscillations in very high voltage power lines. To try and get an understanding of this, John Maytham speaks to Monique Le Roux, the Chief Engineer and head of the Energy Systems and Grid Modelling Research Group (a.k.a. CRSES Next) at Stellenbosch University.
