Enter Charles Atlas.

The man. The myth. The original “before and after” guy.

Atlas was a bodybuilder turned marketer who managed to turn humiliation into one of the most profitable emotions in human history — and he did it with one ridiculous little cartoon.

Picture this: It’s the 1960s. You’re eating sugary cereal, reading a Superman comic, and suddenly — bam — there’s a scrawny kid named Mac. He’s with his girlfriend at the beach. A muscle-bound gorilla of a man kicks sand in his face. The girlfriend says, “Oh Mac, you’re such a weakling.” And Mac just… takes it.

Then the caption hits: “The Insult That Made a Man Out of Mac.”

Every ten-year-old boy in America drops his spoon. “Wait a second,” he thinks, “that is me.”

And right there — in seven cartoon panels — Charles Atlas discovered the secret to eternal direct-response glory: identify shame-build it into rage and offer a solution for the simple price of a stamp or click.
