Your host, Juan Taveras, talks with the Certified Diversity Executive, DEI Coach, and Founder of Amplify DEI, Vivian Acquah. Vivian's journey into the world of DEI consulting is both personal and profound. As a black woman standing six foot one with vibrant hair and a headscarf honoring her Ghanaian roots, Vivian embodies her message of living "loud and proud." Her transition from working in finance and IT to becoming a DEI consultant was sparked by a challenging experience during her pregnancy. Facing maternity ward bias, bullying, and microaggressions, Vivian realized the importance of advocating for those without a voice. This experience, coupled with the birth of her son Orlando, her inspiration, led her to champion DEI initiatives.

Vivian's unique approach to training involves using food references, like her carrot cake analogy, to explain complex DEI concepts. She describes diversity as the various ingredients needed for the cake, each adding value. Equity is the tools required to assemble the cake, ensuring everyone has what they need to contribute effectively. This approach helps demystify DEI and makes it more relatable to her clients.

Vivian emphasized the importance of creating an environment where individuality is not erased but embraced within the larger organizational culture. It's about fostering a workplace where people can bring their uniqueness and feel ownership over it. This approach ensures that subcultures within teams are recognized and valued, contributing to a more inclusive workplace.
