Stories from the Driver's Side - Henry Ford, part 4 - Tinkering and the discovery of vanadium
Manage episode 481426766 series 3562987
On this week's episode, Mary Agrusa from the Savoy Automobile Museum brings us the next chapter in the ongoing story of the rise of Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. Today we discuss the discovery of vanadium, which allowed for steel to be made much stronger and thus could use less, making parts lighter yet more resilient. We also discuss how Ford would "tinker" with components, often asking why not try it a different way? By the end of the first year of the rollout of the Model T in 1908 into 1909, they had made profits in excess of $9 million dollars and they hadn't even thought of the assembly line, yet.
