In this episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Emmett Kane who by the age of 14 has written and recently published a book as part of his studies over 3 years at Mountain Middle School here in Durango, Colorado. The book is titled "World on Fire: A middle Schooler Looks at World War II". Emmett first became interested in the subject after reading "Bomb: The Race to Build - and Steal - The World's Most Dangerous Weapon" in his fifth grade class at school and since then has read close to fifty books on WWII, visited museums and traveled to the beaches of Normandy, France. The forward in Emmett's book is written by the Dean of Inclusion at Mountain Middle School, John Frederick Lauron who along with many of his teachers have been encouraging and supportive providing the time for Emmett to work on his project. Emmett also worked closely with his grandfather Michael Cahn who helped to edit his writing along the way. The book is dedicated to all of those who have served, including his grandfather Carl with two tours in Vietnam, and those who are still serving in the fight for democracy today. With this book Emmett hopes to educate people, especially the next generation, on WWII to help ensure that these events that took place are never repeated. With the support of his family, teachers, and friends this book was brought to fruition. Emmett's focus and dedication may help encourage other young people to realize and pursue their passion. There will be an author's event and book launch at Maria's Reading Room this Wednesday Dec 10 from 5-6:30pm located at 145 East College Drive. The book will be available by donation to Veterans for Peace, a charity that supports veterans and their families. To find out more and to purchase a copy of the book online visit worldonfire.giving.
