On August 17, 2025, South Africa's National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, announced a significant push to implement an electronic monitoring system (EMS) to enhance oversight of parolees. The announcement comes amid public concern about parole violations, including a recent case in Kariega, Eastern Cape, where a parolee was found under the influence at a tavern resulting in re-incarceration.
