Three regional councils in South Australia have been labelled by medical experts as "irresponsible" after passing motions questioning higher levels of government about vaccines.

The councils on the Limestone Coast (Grant, Robe and Naracoorte-Lucindale), as well as the region's Local Government Association, have moved to write to state and federal ministers to ensure vaccines are "free from contaminants and safe for human vaccination".

"Vaccines save lives through preventing and reducing the risk of serious disease and in some instances death. Australia has one of the world's most comprehensive national immunisation programs. About 94% of Australian children aged under 5 are fully immunised against 15 diseases.Before a vaccine or any medication can be used in Australia it must be licensed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The TGA extensively assess each vaccine for safety and effectiveness, and the TGA continues to monitor the safety of vaccines once they are registered.Most residents would expect their councils to be focused on fixing roads rather than questioning medical advice. Determining the safety and efficacy of vaccinations is the responsibility of medical experts based on scientific evidence, and not the role of elected local government representatives.Misinformation on the internet and social media about the safety of vaccines has caused concern for some people. Members of the community who have concerns about vaccinations are encouraged to consult with their healthcare provider."
