IVF patients' parenthood dreams in doubt amid new regulations

Some IVF patients have had their dreams of parenthood put in doubt after being told new Queensland legislation means their embryos no longer meet regulation standards.

The new legislation was passed in September 2024 and requires more transparent records for donor sperm.

So where does this leave those would-be parents, and a system that has stopped a practice it previously accepted?

Queensland Health spokesperson statement to Radio National Breakfast

"Queensland Health has been working closely with providers to understand their concerns about compliance with Section 33 of the Assisted Reproductive Technology Act 2024, which was passed in September last year.

"Queensland Health has consistently communicated the government's approach will focus on education rather than enforcement while Queensland Health explores amendments to address concerns raised by providers."
