Introduction
Today I want to discuss the witchcraft incident recorded in Zizhi Tongjian Jishi Benmo (Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government: Events from Beginning to End), exploring what this historical event teaches us about modern political systems.
Differences Between Western and Chinese Witchcraft Accusations
Western Witchcraft Persecution
In Western history, witchcraft accusations were primarily used to persecute literate and educated women. Rulers feared that educated women would challenge the male-dominated social order, so they used witchcraft charges to intimidate other women and deter them from learning to read or write.
Chinese Witchcraft Incidents
Chinese witchcraft incidents, however, mainly occurred within the imperial court and were essentially power struggles. These complex political events centered around the pursuit of power and influence.
The Witchcraft Incident During Emperor Wu of Han's Reign (141-87 BCE)
Background Analysis
Emperor Wu of Han ruled for 54 years. In his later years, he grew tired of governing after such a long reign. When someone has unlimited power for an extended period without real accountability, it inevitably leads to psychological problems and paranoia.
Problems with the Imperial Marriage System

  • Polygamy: The emperor could have multiple wives and concubines, while women could only marry one husband
  • Age gaps: The emperor could marry young, beautiful women at any time, creating vast age differences
  • Palace competition: Court life was tedious for women, whose only hope was for their sons to inherit the throne

Escalating Power Struggles
Since most women lacked education, they had to rely on family support (fathers, brothers, and other high officials) to gain power. This led to:

  1. Influence of maternal relatives: Families sent daughters or sisters to the palace as tools for gaining power
  2. Mutual accusations: Using witchcraft charges to eliminate political rivals
  3. Father-son suspicion: The emperor even suspected his crown prince of plotting against him

Tragic Consequences
Emperor Wu eventually executed his crown prince, only to later discover he had been deceived by corrupt ministers. The entire incident threw both the inner palace and the court into chaos, with ministers fighting among themselves and governance falling into disarray.
Modern Implications
Three Important Lessons

  1. Marriage system: Monogamy ensures family stability and social harmony
  2. Balance of power: Need for effective separation of powers and checks and balances
  3. Term limits: National leaders should have clearly defined term limits

Advantages of Modern Democratic Systems

  • Separation of powers: Legislative, executive, and judicial branches check and balance each other
  • Regular elections: Prevent excessive concentration and corruption of power
  • Rule of law: No one is above the law

Conclusion
The witchcraft incident reminds us that absolute power corrupts absolutely. We should cherish the checks and balances and term limits in modern democratic systems—these institutional designs exist precisely to prevent historical tragedies from repeating.
In the 21st century, we should especially recognize the importance of establishing sound political institutions that ensure power operates within legal frameworks and prevent the unlimited expansion of individual authority.
