Having an attitude of gratitude and rejoicing fills our souls with hope and joy and changes our disposition to one of positivity. The bible encourages us to think on things that are lovely and of good report. (Phil. 4:8) We are constantly surrounded by evil reports that breed fear and anxiety. Being thankful is a discipline that shifts our meditations onto things that not only create a healthier environment for those around us, but also provides a powerful defense against things like anxiety and discouragement that try to overtake us. We think we have to be happy to be thankful, when in fact, it is being thankful (in whatever state we find ourselves in) that makes us happy. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:6-7)
