Khailing Neoh is a speaker, entrepreneur, and community advocate based in Greenville, South Carolina. Khailing has spent most of her life learning from her community. Her passion for people led her to create Sum Bar, Greenville’s first dim sum restaurant. Food may be the vehicle, but stories and people are the true source of inspiration. Her non-profit work, personal journey, and listening leadership make her qualified to speak on empathy and ego.
In this powerful episode, restaurant owner and TEDx speaker Khailing opens up about the psychology of defensiveness, why even kind-hearted, emotionally intelligent people get triggered so quickly. Discover the key differences between ego and pride, how your ego acts as a protector balancing instincts and morals, and why first reactions often come from learned behaviors while second reactions reflect your true values.
We dive deep into intrusive thoughts, people-pleasing resentment, guilt vs regret, accountability in relationships, and building self-awareness through self-compassion. Learn practical steps like "acknowledge, accept, and continue" to reduce reactivity, embrace vulnerability, and foster deeper connections.
Khailing shares personal stories from her journey, including overcoming people-pleasing and finding pride in fair arguments. If you've ever felt shame for not aligning actions with values, this conversation will help you detach from ego-driven defenses and live more consciously.
In this episode, expect to learn:

  • Why even kind, self-aware people get defensive
  • How ego acts as your inner protector (and when it backfires)
  • The difference between pride, ego, and values
  • How to recognize the gap between who you are and how you act
  • Why shame leads to defensiveness, and how to break the cycle
  • How to apologize meaningfully and repair without guilt
  • Practical tools for building emotional resilience and self-trust
  • How to step out of the "people-pleasing" survival mode
  • Plus much more
