She didn’t believe in ghosts—only in the way a room can bristle like a fight just happened. At a living-history park, she opened the same log house each morning and was often hit by a wave of anger, like walking into someone else’s argument. She’d quietly “greet the lady of the house,” and most days the air would settle… until it didn’t.
From her chair with a clear view of the swollen, heavy door, she’d hear it yanked open—groaning, scraping—while it never actually moved. Children’s laughter rose from the empty grass court. Men’s voices murmured from the cemetery. And some afternoons, heel-to-toe footsteps climbed the stairs above her, a dress whispering across the boards, a window forcing open, a lone rocking chair creaking by the light—yet no one was there when she looked.
Was it a spirit still pacing its home, or history replaying itself like an afterimage on an old screen? She isn’t sure. She just knows that house had a way of answering back.
