In advance of the debut of the new documentary at The Palladium about Albert Whitted Airport history in 10/28-29 (almost sold out) and showing at SPMOH Nov. 19, St. Petersburg Museum of History executive director Rui Farias shares some new aviation history he just discovered: Every year, on the first of January, the Museum of History and the aviation world celebrates more than the start of a new year; it's also the the anniversary of the world's first flight that happened right here in St. Petersburg where the idea of a thing called an airline began. Thanks to Jacksonville businessman Percival Fansler, aeroplane designer and builder, Thomas Benoit, and of course, our favorite aviator brothers, Tony and Roger Jannus. Just 10 years after that historic flight off of Kitty Hawk, the world of airliners and commercial air travel was born in St. Petersburg in 1914. Recently Rui learned the back story about aviator Leonard Bonney.

ABOUT THE FILM The remarkable story of Albert Whitted Aiport – St. Petersburg’s small airport with a big legacy. Albert Whitted Airport has long been a gateway to dreams for aviators and the local community in St. Petersburg, Florida. Now, the airport’s rich history, its pivotal role in aviation, and its deep ties to the community will be spotlighted in an upcoming documentary produced by acclaimed filmmakers Andrew Lee and Laura Landry of Roundhouse Creative Studio.
A Story of Passion and Progress - Albert Whitted Airport’s story is one of determination, growth, and community spirit. Founded in 1929, this small but significant airport has witnessed nearly a century of aviation evolution. Over the years, it has served as a hub for local pilots, commercial aviation, military operations, and even medical services. The airport’s rich history is filled with milestones that reflect the broader growth of aviation in the U.S., making it a symbol of progress not just for St. Petersburg, but for the entire aviation industry. At its heart, this is a story about people—the aviators, community members, and visionaries who have contributed to the airport’s growth and continued success. Their passion for flight and dedication to preserving this historic site is the thread that runs through Albert Whitted’s history. The documentary aims to celebrate the hard work and love that has kept the airport thriving for decades while also looking toward the future of aviation. It’s a testament to the power of passion, progress, and perseverance in building something lasting and impactful.
