Welcome to Historically St Pete, a weekly conversation where Rui Farias, executive director of St. Petersburg Museum of History. Located on the St. Pete Pier. Farias explores the truths, and myths of the people and events that created the Sunshine City.
TODAY'S TOPIC: Central Plaza Development & History
👉Stretching between Fifth Avenues North and South, and between 31st and 34th Street, swampy Goose Pond was bought in 1951 by a real estate syndicate, represented locally by Lowell Fyvolent. They bought four blocks along Central Avenue, between 34th and 31st Streets, and began plans to fill and level the land and recruit commercial tenants.
👉The newly named Central Plaza first tenants in 1952 were Publix, A&P, McCrory’s, and Liggett’s Drugstore. Central Plaza opened in November 1952 and between 30,000 and 50,000 customers visited Central Plaza on its opening day. Miami's popular Jewish deli opened in the Plaza - Wolfie’s Delicatessen, as well as Firestone and Rayco Upholstery.
👉Business boomed, so developers purchased more blocks around Central Avenue to create a “North Plaza”, renamed the Central Plaza Mall which opened in 1957 and was designed by famous architect Morris Lapidus, (who designed the Fountainbleu and Eden Roc hotels in Miami, as well as Temple Beth El in St. Petersburg)
