The federal government is being asked to intervene to save hundreds of jobs as Australia's smelting industry struggles to stay afloat.

The latest request for help comes from Nyrstar Australia which says it needs support within weeks to keep sites in South Australia and Tasmania running.

The company is pointing the finger at China for distorting the market, but its own parent company has suggested it might simply have become uncompetitive.
