On 16 August 2012, South Africa witnessed its deadliest use of state violence against civilians since the end of apartheid. Thirty-four striking mineworkers were gunned down by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the Marikana platinum mine owned by Lonmin PLC in the North West province.
