ASTROPHYSICS AND THE FUTURE OF HUMANITY

Lord Martin Rees is one of the most accomplished scientists of the 20th and 21st century. With over 500 research publications and a large number of popular books on science, he has made immense and significant impact on the fields of high-energy astrophysics, cosmology, galaxy formation, the origins of the cosmic microwave background, and in popular science communication.

Lord Rees is the 15th Astronomer Royal, following on from giants such as Halley and Dyson, and sits in the House of Lords. He is part of the golden generation of astrophysicists from the mid twentieth century that included Stephen Hawking, Fred Hoyle, Subraman Chandrasekhar, and Freeman Dyson among others. He became Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Director of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University, where he is still active today.

Rees won the Wolf Prize and was President of the Royal Society for many years where he is still a fellow. He helped formulate the Longitude Prize for scientific breakthrough. He is part of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, and founded the Centre for Existential Risk.
