In this chilling episode of The Paramurder Cast, we delve into the horrifying crimes of Lawrence Sigmund Bittaker and Roy Lewis Norris, known as the "Tool Box Killers." This American serial killer duo committed the kidnapping, rape, torture, and murder of five teenage girls in Southern California over a five-month period in 1979.
Bittaker and Norris met in prison and bonded over their shared interest in sexual violence and misogyny. They made a pact to kill one girl of each teenage year from 13 through 19 after their release. The pair used a van, which they nicknamed "Murder Mac," to pick up their victims, often hitchhikers.
Their first victim was 16-year-old Lucinda Lynn Schaefer, who they abducted, raped, and strangled before throwing her body over a canyon. They went on to commit similar atrocities against four more young women: Andrea Joy Hall, Jackie Doris Gilliam, Jacqueline Leah Lamp, and Shirley Lynette Ledford.
The killers used various tools from their toolbox to torture their victims, including pliers, ice picks, and sledgehammers. They also recorded some of the horrific acts on audio tape, which provided crucial evidence against them in court.
Bittaker was sentenced to death for the five murders but died of natural causes on death row in 2019. Norris accepted a plea bargain, agreeing to testify against Bittaker in exchange for a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 30 years. He died of natural causes in 2020.
