Mr. Wolfe accepted an invitation to a cocktail party at the Empire Towers hosted by Mrs. Albert Collins. However, he actually has no plans to attend. He sends Archie instead. Mr. Wolfe says to Archie "Arrive at seven and say that I sent you. After the murder, telephone me before the police arrive". At exactly seven o'clock, Archie rings the doorbell. A lady answers the door and he says "Mrs. Collins? I'm Archie Goodwin. We talked on the phone a little while ago". Mrs. Collins says "Oh, yes. Come in, Mr. Goodwin". Archie says "Mr. Wolf begs to be excused at the last moment. He was unable to attend". She says "Well, I'm glad you could come". Archie says "You're not disappointed?" Mrs. Collins says "No, I don't think so, but I am rather upset. I'm afraid, Mr. Goodwin, for my life. That's why I called Mr. Wolf. Oh, you may leave your hat and coat there Mr. Goodwin". Archie says "Please call me Archie, Mrs. Goodwin". She says "Yes, and please call me Janie. Oh, and by the way, Archie, I think it would be best if I say you're an old beau of mine". Archie says "From where?" Janie says "In Hollywood. When I went to Hollywood High School and you went to USC". Archie says "Okay, but don't expect me to remember much about it". Janie says "I'll be flattered if you remember anything about it. Now, I want you to keep your eyes and ears open. Observe everything tonight. Okay, let's join the party.
