Mr. Patrick Scott had just began his holiday when he checked in at the Marlo Cove Hotel. The Marlo Cove area was known for it's popularity as a beautiful vacation and tourist spot. The next day, after tea, he decided to take a walk up to the top of the Marlo Cliffs to see the Bay and the surrounding areas. Once he was near the summit, he found a pay telescope which offered magnificent close-up views of the Marlo Bay. Looking out, he noticed their were no boats in the bay, except for one small dinghy with a single fisherman. Scott believed he recognized the fisherman as Steven Manoring, another guest in the hotel. Scott continued enjoying the views from the telescope, then turned his attention back to the dinghy. He noticed that the boat was still visible, but there was no sight of Manoring. Thinking that he might be in need of assistance, or possibly rescue, Scott hurried down to the jetty, and luckily Mr. Hayes was there with his boat. Scott jumped in and they went after him. Hays said "Did you say he fell out of the boat? He might have drowned by now". Scott says "I can see the dinghy, but I can't see any sign of Mannering". A few seconds later Scott says "There he is, grab his coat". They brought him back to the shore, thinking that they were taking part in a rescue operation as a result of an accident. They did not expect to find Steven Manoring dead, nor that his death was caused by a blunt instrument and not by drowning.
