Sergeant Rushton pays a visit to Chief Superintendent Lawton's office. Lawton asks "You want to see me?" Rushton says "Sir, we're collecting for Inspector Chew's retirement present and we thought you'd like to contribute". Lawton asks "Who got this up?" Rushton says "I did, Sir". Lawton says "You put me in a damned embarrassing position. The senior officers and myself have had our own collection round". Rushton asks "Just the senior officers, Sir?, that's not usual." Lawton says "Yes, I know it's not usual, Sergeant. The situation itself is not usual. We didn't think anyone else would bother, particularly the other ranks, and Inspector Chew is not exactly popular is he?” At that moment, Chew walks in and says "Did I hear my name mentioned?" Lawton says "Ah, Chew, come in, come in. The Sergeant and I were just saying your retirement is next week". Chew says "Happily counting the days until the end of next week, much to everyone's delight, no doubt". Lawton says "In your capacity as Chief Training Officer for the division, what is the subject of your lecture to the detective trainees? Chew says "The Waverton Kidnapping". Lawton asks "Is that wise?" Chew says "You can learn more from a failure than you can from a success". In the classroom, Chew says "Alright gentlemen thank you, simmer down play time's over. My name is Inspector Chew. So, you want to be detectives, then you'd all better listen to me. I've forgotten more about detection than you'll ever know". One student raises his hand. Chew says "Yes?" The student says "Collins, sir" Chew says "Yes, Collins?" He says "May I ask a question, Sir?" Chew says "If you must". Collins asks "Are you the same inspector to who caught the Hammersmith Bullion Gang in the 50's, Sir?" Chew says "Yes, that was one of mine, a long time ago. Have any of you heard about the Waverton Kidnapping?" One student says "It was never solved, was it, Sir?" Chew says "No, it was also one of my cases, the last one in fact. They wouldn't let me handle anymore after that".
