It is Friday afternoon, and Hal Lawrence, traveling salesman, is on his way home, looking forward to a nice weekend. He was driving a little faster than he should have, but it was a beautiful day and he was thinking about his wife, Ellen, and his young son, Jackie. He was driving on the hilly and winding section of Highway 11B and just getting into town when it happened. Hal did not see him. He was watching the road, but the young boy just ran right out front of his car. Hal says to himself "I hit him! The boy screamed, I know he screamed, but I couldn't hear him over the sound of the brakes. I hit him hard. He couldn't have been more than eight or nine years old. I hit him and then saw him fly through the air! I didn't mean to do it, but I didn't even see him hit the ground, because I didn't stop". Soon, Hal arrived home, despite being unable to stop himself from shaking and being terribly upset. He stops in front of his house, but can not get out of his car, because he is afraid somebody would see him and know what happened. Then, Hal hears a distant siren, slowly coming closer. He couldn't move. Suddenly, the siren goes past him. It was an ambulance passing by. He felt wet and cold with fear. He wished it was dark so that he could sneak into the house. Nervously, Hal opens the door of the car and hurries into his house. His wife, Ellen says "Hal? Hal is that you?" He says "Yes, it's me". Ellen says "You're home early, did everything go alright?" Hal says "Yes, yes". Ellen says "Would you like something to eat, darling?" Hal says "I don't want anything. I'm alright". Ellen says "Well, don't bite my ears off, I'm just asking". Hal says "I'm sorry Ellen, I didn't mean to." Ellen says "Well, dinner will be ready soon. You must be hungry after that terrible trip". Hal says "Stop talking about my trip" Ellen says "Something is wrong, Hal. You are not yourself".
