Mr. Keen is in his office, when his partner, Mike Clancy, steps in to speak with him. Mike says "Sorry to disturb you, Mr. Keen, But, there's a strange-looking fellow in the outer office. He wants to see you" Mr. Keen says "A strange-looking man?" Mike says "He's got a French accent, but he's wearing an Arabian outfit, like a moving picture extra. He says his name is Lafarge, and it's a matter of life and death". Mr. Keen says "I'll see him at once, Mike". Mike says "Right, sir". Mike proceeds to bring Lafarge into the office. Mr. Keen asks "You wanted to see me?" The man says "Mr. Keen, my name is Lafarge, Monsieur Jean Lafarge. I am grateful that you consented to see me. The situation cannot wait". Mr. Keen asks "What was it you wanted to see me about, Mr. Lafarge?" He says "Murder, Monsieur. Last night, a woman named Edna Corring was killed in her home here in New York" Mr. Keen says "Edna Corring? Seems to me I've heard that name before". Lafarge says "She was a very wealthy and beautiful woman, Monsieur Keen, much in the news". Mike says "I didn't read about her murder in the papers this morning". Lafarge says "It was kept from the papers, Monsieur Clancy. The police believe they will have a better chance to catch the killer if there is no publicity at the moment".
