It is eight o'clock in the morning, and in the bustling city most people are up and about their business. However, the attractive apartment of Eric Belden is ominously quiet as Lettie Stone, the daily cleaning woman, enters. As she moves toward the bedroom door, she says "That's funny, Mr. Belden is always up at this hour. He's usually finished with breakfast too and on his way to the studio. I don't see any breakfast dishes. The bedroom door is closed and the key is on the outside. That is strange". Lettie knocks on the bedroom door and says "Mr. Belden? Mr. Belden, are you in there?" Lettie says to herself "I better open the door and see. He might be sick". She slowly opens the door, and looks into the room. She says "Oh...Oh heavens! He has been shot! He's dead!" What's the trouble?" Lettie says "Eric, he's dead, Miss Katie!" She says "Oh poor Eric. I knew he'd been depressed lately, but what a horrible thing to do, to kill himself that way". Lettie asks "You think he did it himself, Miss Katie? I better call the police". Katie says "Go ahead and call them, Lettie, but I tell you it's suicide!" A little while later, Mr. Chameleon and Detective Sergeant Dave Arnold are at the scene. While Mr. Chameleon is looking at the body, he says "Dave, look at this. The position of the gun was placed here too carefully. This wasn't suicide, it was murder!"
