It is late at night in the deserted waterfront of a large southern city. Two guys named Blackie and Polty are following another man down to a warehouse. Blackie says "He takes 190 bucks from me in a card game, and then says he don't want to play no more. You told us he was your cousin, Polty. What kind of a guy is this?" Polty says "I don't know Blackie. He just got into the country today, besides he's sick. You could see how sick he was". Blackie says "Not too sick to take my hundred and ninety". Polty says "Blackie, there he is. He's behind those trucks there". Blackie says "I want my money back, Polty". He says "All right, come on let's get it". Two shots are then heard. The next day, Paul Cleaver, the local coroner, calls his boss, Dr. Clinton Reed, about some strange results from the autopsy of a homicide victim. Dr. Reed agrees to come down to the morgue to take a look. He says "You better hold everybody there that had any contact with the body, just in case". Shortly, Dr. Reed arrives at the morgue and asks Cleaver "When did they bring the body in?" Cleaver says "About two hours ago. I did the autopsy right away". Reed asks "Besides you, how many others handled the body?" Cleaver says "About a dozen. They're down the hall waiting". Dr. Reed takes a look through microscope, and says "It's pure culture. Cleaver, keep away from the body, and have it cremated. I want everything that's touched him either buried or sterilized". Cleaver says "Oh, they sent over the serum, the streptomycin just before you got here". Reed says "Good, we'll take a shot, then get to work on the men down the hall, two cc's each. Cleaver, not a word about what it really is. I'm gonna call the mayor let's hope he can see me right away".
