Miss Brooks, answering the phone for George Valentine, receives a call from a confused little man named Abner. Brooksie says "Hello?" Abner says "I would, but I can't, you see. It's a great ad. I've seen it lots of times. Oh, a great ad, I said to myself. There's a kind of a guy that when a guy's in a pinch can...." Brooksie says "Well, just a minute. Mr. Valentine...." George says "I'll get on the extension, Angel". Abner says "Hello? Hello? I haven't got much time". George says "Yeah, I'm right here. I got it. No time to write, but who are you? What's your problem?" Abner says "Now, this is a real pleasure, sir. If you'll permit me, my name is Abner and I'm in jail". George asks "Your what?" Abner says "Only don't get me wrong. The reason I can't write is because I can't write. You understand?" George says "Wait a minute. You said you were...." Abner says "That's right. I'm in jail. And let me tell you a more unjust thing has never happened to me. There ain't no justice...." Brooksie says " Mr. Abner, slow down a little. I'm trying to write". Abner says "It's important, that's all. There wouldn't be time to write either, I guess, for that matter. But the main thing is it's important. That's what I've got to make you understand, see? You get me?" George says "Oh, sure. You make it so easy". Abner says "Yeah, well, I'm kind of excited. You see, the jail burned down". George says "Oh, yeah. And you burned down with it." Abner says "Now, hold on. I mean the jail over in Melody. That's where I'm calling from". Brooksie says "Melody? Over in the valley?" Abner says "Yes, sir. That's the one. And a beautiful little town it is for tarantulas. But that old jail, let me tell you, was the biggest eye sore...." George says "Hold it, hold it, will you? Now, say something sensible or hang up". Abner says "But I am. I mean, just because I can't write. Now, listen, the fire was last night. They moved us out, that's all. Now we're locked up in the sheriff's office. That's how I could get to the phone". George says "Ah, clear as a bell". Abner says "Listen to me. I got out of the fire, understand? Only one of the guys in the big cell, he didn't. He's dead. And if I tell what I know about it, I'll be dead too".
