I Was a Communist for the FBI - I Can't Sleep
Manage episode 517292806 series 3603785
Matt Cvetic is talking on the telephone to his contact at the FBI. He says "I've got to see you right away. I'm heading for a conference with a big wheel and if it's about what I think it is, I'd better talk to you". The contact asks "Where are you calling from?" Matt says "Drugstore phone booth". The contact says "Then, let me do the talking. Do you think the meeting is about Otto Janus?" Matt says "They say it was suicide. I think it was murder". The contact says "Never mind what you think. Just let the comrades think you believe it was suicide". Matt asks "Was it?" Contact says "Look, Matt, go to that conference with Buchek, but watch yourself. You may be in a tough spot". Matt says "I have a funny feeling I'm on the same spot Otto Janus was before he got his". Contact says "Go to the meeting, then meet me on the southwest corner of 9th and Viaduct". Matt says "Okay". Contact says "Watch yourself". As Matt walks toward the communist headquarters for his meeting with Joseph Bucheck, Matt is thinking "Was Otto Janus told to watch himself before they found him dead?" He notices his footsteps echo the cadence of a name familiar to Americans who read good books. "Otto Janus, author and critic, Otto Janus, author of Farewell Nero, author of Citizen Slav, authored Trumpet the Brave Country, history, immigrant, patriot, communist party member, and corpse. He was found hanging pitifully in his hotel room in New York City. Why such an end to such a man? How? That's what Joseph Buchek wants to talk to me about. Little Joe, very close to Big Joe himself in the Kremlin. Watch yourself, Cvetic".
