Detective Sergeants Joe Friday and Ben Romero were working the night watch out of the Los Angeles Police Homicide Division. At 5:35 PM, they got out of their car and walked toward the scene of the crime, The Loupos Cafe. One or more persons shot up the cafe using a machine gun. Romero says "Look at that, Joe. Took out the whole front of the place". As they walked inside, another officer was there named Shelton, from the Hollywood Division. Shelton says "My partner Taylor and I picked up the call in our car. Nobody was hurt". Romero asks "What's the story?" Just then, Captain Elliot appears at the scene. Elliot looks at the damage, and says "Not much of it left". Friday says "Shelton here was in the cruiser, he can fill us in". Shelton says "The intended victim was Gus Valentine. He's over there with Taylor, my partner. According to Valentine, he stopped in the restaurant here for a drink. He was in there about 15 minutes, came out to hail a cab, and this car came around the corner, from down there, Sunset and Clayton. They whipped by close to the curb and opened up". Elliot says "There's a laundry there on one side of the place and a dry cleaning joint on the other side". Shelton says "Yes sir, it's a miracle, but nobody was hit". Friday asks "Did you get anything on the car?" Shelton says "Nothing, so far. It happened so fast, nobody got a good look at it". Romero asks "How about Valentine? Does he have any ideas?" Shelton says "I don't know. Taylor's getting the information". Elliot asks "Did anyone see anything? Any witnesses?" Shelton says "Yes sir, a couple, a newsboy, Tim Benson, and a lady in the dry cleaning place, Agnes Rebar. Neither of them got a license number".
