Rocky Stark and his wife Kim are discussing their dire financial situation at breakfast. Kim says "You're in one of your down modes again. Some things aren't all that bad with us". Rocky says "Sure, living in one room in a condemned tenement, me with a crummy night watchman job that pays peanuts, no future, and no sign even of a future, and you can say things aren't all that bad?" Kim says "We've got each other. In fact, you in prison two years and all. Well, to me it's everything Rocky". He says "Oh Kim, baby, don't get me wrong. Those two years behind bars, I'm thinking of you, and how much Manny Revell owes me. So, I get out and go to see him at the Golden Calf, and what did he say? I'm afraid you are out. Then he really lays it on me. He's got a new partner, that two bit punk, Johnny Mallory". Kim says "Rocky sweetheart, forget it. What's the sense of going over it again and again". Rocky says "I can't forget it, I thought we were running a legit night spot, and behind my back, he's got a loan shark operation going. He comes to me and says, I'm a three-time loser. You take the bath for me and I'll make it up to you. Sure, I took the bath alright and I'm still drowning, and you along with me. That's what drives me crazy. I'm alone in that warehouse all night, thinking what you deserve to have. If you hadn't been fool enough to marry me...." Kim says "I married you because I love you. Things are going to work out. They're working out already. You've got a job, and you were afraid you never would. It's a step towards something better. A friend promised you it would be". Rocky says "Don't get me wrong, Kim. I've got a lot of respect for my brother Frank. He's gone far. He's a city councilman and only 33 years old". A few seconds later, there is a knock at their door. Rocky asks "Who could that be? He walks over and opens it. Two men are standing there, and one of them asks "Are you Rocky Stark?" He says "Yeah". The first man says "I'm Lieutenant Chambers, and this is Detective Rollins". Rocky asks "What do you want?" Chambers says "You're under arrest". Rocky asks "For what?" Chambers says "Suspicion of murder". Rocky asks "Who's murder?" Chambers says "A guy named Johnny Mallory".
