It is midnight and the Blue Note Cafe is doing its usual brisk business. From the service end of the bar, a waiter named Walter calls over Ethelbert, the head bartender. Ethelbert says "What do you want, Walter?" He says "The guy at that table next to the wall wants another drink, but I'd say he's had too much already". Ethelbert says "You better collect his bill and ease him into a cab". Walter says "Okay". Ethelbert says "Wait a minute. His face is familiar. You know who he is?" Walter says "No, he's no one to me". Ethelbert says "I can't place him, but he's a clean cut looking guy. See, he gets a right cab, Walter, with a driver you know". Walter says "Okay, I'll try to get him out and into a cab". At that moment, Casey and Miss Williams come up to the bar. Casey says "Hi, Ethelbert". He says "Well, Casey. Evening, Miss Williams. You two just put the paper to bed?" Casey says "Yeah, nothing to do now, but go home and get some shut eye". Miss Williams says "Oh, now I'll go for that. Oh, I'm tired". Casey says "You and me both, Annie. Just then, they hear the drunk guy tell Walter "I don't want to go home. I want another drink. Please, mister. No, no, I don't want to go home". Miss Williams says "One of your customers isn't listening to reason, Ethelbert". Casey says "Hey, isn't that Artie Maddux?" Ethelbert says "Artie Maddux? Yeah, I knew I'd seen him before. When did he get out of the big house?" Casey says "Last month, on parole". Miss Williams asks "You mean that nice looking man is an ex-convict?" Ethelbert says "Yeah, and he was sent up for murder. Casey says "Well, not quite. That was manslaughter. There was a lot of doubt that he was actually guilty. A lot of folks, including cops, were convinced that he was covering up for Gypsy Hibbert, the singer that Artie had fell for and wanted to marry. Most believed that Gypsy had actually shot and killed Phil Blaney, a big shot in the gambling rackets here".
