Manage episode 502328133 series 3603785
On a little farm in the Great Central Valley of Oregon, Mrs. Slater is busily preparing her son, Dale, for a journey. She says "There now, there's socks, shirts, and toothbrush. That's about everything". Dale says "Thank you, Mother. I sure was nice of you to get me those things brand new". She says "Well, you'll want good durable clothes when you get to Los Angeles. Dale says "It's getting late. I've got to get started". Mrs. Slater says "Now, wait a minute, I almost forgot, these have to go in the bag". Dale says "Blankets? Now what the devil do I need with blankets in Los Angeles?" She says "Well, you never can tell what the weather will be Dale and I don't want you to catch a cold. Now, don't you believe all you read about the warm sun and the palm trees. I hear the nights down there can be downright chilly. There you are, now you are all packed". Dale says "Alright, I've got to get going". She says "Well, goodbye son". Dale says "Goodbye Mother, I'll send for you just as soon as I can get a job". She says "And don't you forget to write to me every day". Dale says "I won't. Goodbye". She says "Goodbye son". Dale Slater, Carpenter's helper, sets out for a new life in the Southland. True to his promise, he writes his mother every day. On June 15th, 1931, Dale's letter reads "The job opportunities in Los Angeles are scarce, but I am going to Boulder City on June 16th. with a man who knows several of the foremen there. He says that he can get jobs for both of us". That was the last letter Mrs. Slater received.
