At noon, Detective Danny Clover receives a phone call from Max Wendell, at his place of business on 39th Street. He says "Danny, I need to see you, quick". When Danny arrives, Max says "Danny, am I glad to see you". Danny says "You sounded worried when I talked to you on the phone, Max. What's the trouble?" Max says "When you look at me, you see a completely rehabilitated, practically a new man type of man. You see that, huh?" Danny says "The cure did you good, Max, you look fine". Max says "Look, I don't need compliments, I got trouble. This morning a no-good from way back came into here. You know what he wanted me to do? He said he's got pounds of the stuff" Danny says "Narcotics?" Max says "Yeah, on account of once in the dead past I was known as an addict of the stuff. He comes to me and wants me to distribute for him" Danny says "Who was he?" Max says "I don't remember his name". Just then, a customer comes in to Max's store. He says "Just a second, Danny". Max walks toward the customer and says "Is there something I can do for you?" The customer pulls out a pistol. Max yells "Danny, it's the no-good from way back!" The customer shoots Max, then starts firing toward Danny!
