Detective Danny Clover is assigned to investigate a homicide at an exclusive apartment hotel, while the street is busy with the sights and sounds of the carnival. Danny was summoned by Mr. Tracy, the hotel manager. They are both in a guest room, looking at a body of a man sprawled across the silk sheets of his bed, now bloody from a bullet wound. Because blood like that can stain the reputation of an exclusive hotel, Mr. Tracy makes a suggestion. He says "This can be, can be..." Danny says "What, Mr. Tracy, what can it be?" He says "Handled discreetly, of course. You can do that. You have the power, the know-how, to keep it out of the papers". Danny asks "Anything else?" Mr. Tracy says "Nothing more I can think of at the moment". Danny says "That's good. Now you can do something for me". Tracy says "Understand me, Mr. Clover. Managing this place is all consuming. I spent years at school, here and abroad, learning the ins and outs of the profession, the values..." Danny says "With all that education, maybe you can spell out for me the murdered man's name". Tracy says "The fellow on our bed was once Frank Dunn, a bartender, of all things. A rather crude chap, I thought". Danny says "But genteel enough to pay the tab in this slick joint of yours". Tracy says "They do bartenders like Dunn well at the Trade Winds, I hear". Danny asks "The club on West 52nd?" Tracy says "I wouldn't know where the place was". Danny says "Tell me more about Dunn". Tracy says "Well, he appealed to the female of the species, shall we say. They called on him constantly, at all hours". Danny asks "Did he get a call tonight?" Tracy says "Well, that's difficult to say, but do you not detect the faint odor of a lingering perfume?"
