Max Roach was tasked by the NAACP to create a recording to celebrate the centennial of the end of slavery. Along with Oscar Brown Jr and Abbey Lincoln, Max was instrumental in fundraising for The NAACP and CORE by playing in benefits and fundraisers. But the question is how to create a record about a freedom that wasn't realized. The record;s prominence was not achieved until it was banned in South Africa.
