If Russia doesn’t end its invasion, Kremlin officials should ensure they know the location of the nearest bomb shelter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with Axios published Thursday.
According to Zelensky, during his meeting with Donald Trump on Tuesday, the former U.S. president said Kyiv should respond to Russian strikes in kind. Zelensky noted that Trump supports Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure and military factories in retaliation for Russian attacks.
He said he asked Trump for a specific new weapons system on Tuesday that would force Vladimir Putin to come to the negotiating table, though did not specify what it was. He added that if the U.S. supplies Ukraine with long-range weapons, the country will use them.
At the same time, Zelensky stressed that Ukraine does not intend to bomb civilians because “we are not terrorists.” However, he also suggested that Russian power centers like the Kremlin could become legitimate targets for Kyiv.
“They have to know where the bomb shelters are,” Zelensky said of Kremlin officials. “They need it. If they will not stop the war, they will need it in any case. […] If they attack us, we will answer them.”
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, has already reacted to Zelensky’s remarks on social media. “What the freak needs to know is that Russia can use weapons a bomb shelter won’t protect against. Americans should also keep this in mind,” he wrote.
