This paper evaluates global progress in drinking water and sanitation access during the MDG period, using Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) to analyze non-linear country-level trajectories, unlike the traditional linear regression. The study reveals varied patterns (acceleration, deceleration, saturation), indicating non-linear trends are common and offer a more accurate understanding of progress. This diverse trajectory characterization can help policymakers effectively allocate resources and address specific country needs for SDG transition.
