The 4 Parent Archetypes I’ve identified in my years of coaching – and why only one is truly living the life they want.
The Four Parent Archetypes
- Shocked Parent (25%)
- Often new to diagnosis
- Stuck in grief cycles (denial, anger, bargaining, depression) – sometimes all in one day
- Constantly Googling, feeling overwhelmed, unsure where to start
- Thoughts: "Did I cause this?", "Will my child ever be independent?"
- Isolated Parent (30%)
- Withdraws from social life to avoid judgement or awkward questions
- Convinced “no one understands”
- Avoids gatherings and support, leading to burnout
- Thoughts: "It’s easier to stay home", "No one can handle my child like I can"
- Warrior Parent (35%)
- Always in battle mode – schools, doctors, systems
- Advocacy skills are sharp, but joy in parenting fades
- Believes burnout proves devotion
- Thoughts: "If I don’t fight, who will?", "I can rest when my child gets what they deserve"
- In-Control & Calm Parent (10%) – The Goal
- Clear vision, balanced plan
- Manages emotions instead of being managed by them
- Prioritises self-care as essential, not selfish
- Lives fully – with goals for themselves and their child
- Thoughts: "We’ve got this", "We are both capable of amazing things"
Key Message
- The difference between just surviving and truly thriving isn’t your child’s needs, finances, or support system.
- It’s emotional mastery – learning to feel your emotions without being ruled by them.
- When I shifted to being calm and in control, my son had fewer meltdowns, my relationships improved, and I started living my dreams again.
