Culture, Feeling Less Than and Finding Your Worth: Author, Brenda Do

"We're always looking on the outside for our worth."
Brend Do
As a Chinese girl growing up in 1970s America, Brenda noticed that none of the books at school or in the library featured characters who looked like her.
Even at that young age, the lack of diversity made her feel excluded. Worse, it planted a seed that she wasn’t as good as the kids pictured in the books.
So, in writing her inaugural children’s book, “It’s Okay Not to Know,” Brenda intentionally created inclusive characters that all children can relate to. The story features whimsical characters not defined by race, gender, socioeconomic status, or physical ability.
As a seasoned copywriter, Brenda expertly distills complex social-emotional learning themes into accessible narratives.
“You know how adults often look back at their younger selves and think If I only knew then what I know now...?
She wrote this book to offer some of that knowledge. So, our young ones can get a head start at living their best lives,” she said.
Brenda’s goal is to provide caregivers with language that helps young learners feel confident, even in moments of uncertainty, and to face new experiences with courage.
