We discuss the nature and pervasiveness of idolatry, defining it as giving honour due solely to God to His creatures or human inventions. They assert that idolatry is not limited to overt image worship but subtly infiltrates even professedly Christian churches through various forms, such as exalting secondary religious elements like the church or sacraments, spiritual idolatry of loving possessions or people more than God, or devising visible "helps" in worship. The sources pinpoint the natural corruption of man's heart as the fundamental cause of idolatry, noting its historical presence in the Old Testament and its gradual emergence within the Christian church. Specifically, the Roman Catholic Church is highlighted for its systematic idolatry through the reverence of images, saints, relics, and the host, and the role of priests as mediators, a practice the texts argue will only truly end with the second coming of Christ.
