In Approaching Jesus, Dave looks at Mark 7: 24-37.

Dave discusses two encounters Jesus had with Gentiles:

1. The Syrophoenician Woman – A desperate mother begs Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter. Jesus initially responds with a parable comparing Gentiles to dogs, emphasising that His mission is first to the Jews. However, the woman humbly acknowledges this but persists, demonstrating great faith. Jesus rewards her faith by healing her daughter.2. The Deaf and Mute Man – Jesus heals a man by using physical gestures, showing sensitivity to his condition. After healing him, Jesus instructs people to keep quiet, but they eagerly spread the news.

Dave emphasises how, like the Syrophoenician woman, we should persist in seeking Jesus, trusting in His goodness. Though Jesus’ mission began with Israel, His mercy extends to all who believe. He meets people where they are, serving their needs with love.
