In Aramaic, the word for fasting is ܨܘܡܐ (ṣomā), from the root ܨܡ (ṣam), meaning to abstain, to hold oneself back, or to stand still. But in the Semitic worldview, this word carries far more than the physical act of skipping meals it represents a deep spiritual meaning of surrender.
