Push Last week, the fight over California’s redistricting plans entered a new stage after Governor Gavin Newsom released a new congressional map that could flip five Republican-held seats in next year’s midterm election. Democratic state lawmakers are looking to pass a measure this week to have the new map go before voters in a November special election, which would go around California’s independent redistricting commission. Councilmember Talamantes on Natomas Development
Located in the northwest corner of the city of Sacramento, and separated by I-80, Natomas is known for its agricultural history, residential areas, parks and continued development. The latest proposal is the controversial Upper Westside project, which would add housing for tens of thousands of new residents but has drawn opposition from community members and city officials. Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes represents the city’s 3rd District, which includes Natomas, and joins Insight to talk about how the region is growing and changing, as well as how residents are responding to the new developments.Author Shelley Blanton-Stroud’s New Novel
On Aug. 14, 1945, World War II came to an end following the surrender of Japan. The day was met with widespread jubilation in the United States, but some of the celebrations resulted in violence and death. A new work of historical fiction looks at these “peace riots” in San Francisco and how they were, or should have been, covered in the news, as well as the role of women in journalism during the 1940s. Author Shelley Blanton-Stroud joins us ahead of the debut of "An Unlikely Prospect." A launch party for the book will take place Aug. 19 at Magpie Cafe in Sacramento.91 episodes
