Support for CA Redistricting

In 10 weeks, on Nov. 4, voters will make a decision to temporarily bypass California’s independent redistricting commission to redraw the state’s congressional maps as a counterbalance to Texas Republicans redrawing its maps to gain an advantage in the 2026 midterm. A move that has sparked heated debate. This is an ongoing conversation we’ll be having on Insight. You will hear from a wide range of voices. Yesterday, we were joined by guests who oppose Proposition 50 The Election Rigging Response Act. Today we’re listening to support. Rusty Hicks is the Chair of the California Democratic Party, which officially endorsed Prop 50. We are also joined by Omar Noureldin, Senior Vice President of Policy and Litigation at the national government watchdog group Common Cause, which has walked back its opposition to California’s redistricting push.

Former Independent Redistricting Commissioner Sara Sadhwani was scheduled for today’s show, but canceled her appearance.

However, some students are continuing their education clandestinely, helped by organizations providing online instruction - including one nonprofit in the Sacramento region. Walid Jailani is the founder and President of The School of Freedom, and talks about how his organization aims to help Afghan girls learn English and express their creativity.

After the Camp Fire destroyed much of the town of Paradise in 2018, a group of educators got together to develop a playbook for families to help kids cope. We’ll talk with some of the people involved in creating the playbook and why they think it’s important to share with others. Lindsey Nenadal is a professor of Child Development at Chico State, Scott Dinits is with the Boys & Girls Club of the North Valley, and Tess Manley is an Early Childhood Specialist in Butte County.
