In this episode of The Inclusive Dad Podcast, host AAron welcomes Wendy Hooton, an author and advocate for Down syndrome inclusion. Wendy shares her journey of raising her son with Down Syndrome, highlighting the evolving meaning of inclusion throughout his life. She discusses her book, Big People Don’t Pee in the Park, which blends humor and heartfelt experiences to support parents navigating a similar path. Wendy emphasizes the importance of fostering independence, social inclusion, and advocacy, offering insights on how communities can better support individuals with disabilities beyond childhood.

Key Takeaways:

Evolving Inclusion – Inclusion means more than being present; it's about thriving in a community.

Advocacy Matters – Parents must advocate for education and future independence.

Humor & Authenticity – Sharing real stories, even humorous ones, helps break stigma.

Social Connection – Programs like Best Buddies foster friendships and inclusion.

Changing Perspectives – Inclusion benefits everyone, not just those with disabilities.

Wendy’s definition of inclusion:

Inclusion is helping all people, including those who have differing abilities, to achieve their dreams, goals and desires.

Wendy’s Bio:

About me, long story short-

I’m a product of the sixties who loves music and enjoying life. I do both, with the help of my son who puts music in my heart (most days) and makes life fun (most of the time). He comes by it naturally; I think it’s the pizazz in the extra chromosome he was born with. Thirty plus years ago I not only became a mom for the first time, but I became a Down syndrome advocate as well. An unexpected plan for my life, but then I don’t think I’ve ever had a plan that didn’t have a kink in it. Those always seem to be the best ones.

Fast forward thirty years and I've just fulfilled a dream by publishing my nonfiction, self-help, memoir. A book about this unplanned journey and the joy and growth that have come with it.

My hope? To support other parents who might be going through something similar to what I did after being shocked by the Universe that day. And if I manage to teach and inspire others along the way, even better!

Life is short so make each day count, like an extra chromosome.
