Most real businesses are built in the quiet, unglamorous graft between school runs, tax returns and wondering if that chicken in the fridge is still edible. Steven Bartlett, of
The Diary of a CEO fame, seems like a nice chap but he's 32 and used to be a rapper. I don’t do business from a podcast studio with mood lighting, I do it from my house, in between trying to get someone at HMRC to answer the phone and shouting at the dog for sitting on the printer. I suppose that makes me the female version of Steven Bartlett but for the elasticated waistband generation.
These little snippets are about building something solid, something you own, something that keeps paying you long after the hashtags have been forgotten. It’s for those of us in our Mrs Merton years - seasoned, unflappable with Bridget Jones big pants underneath - who’ve had it up to here with jargon and just want some kernels of truth that will help us through our next business crisis.

I will not tell you to “lean in” (because you’re already holding up the entire room). I will not insist you “find your passion” (it’s called profit, darling, and it’s not a dirty word). And I will not pretend that if you manifest hard enough, the universe will deliver, unless by manifest you mean sending four shouty work emails chasing deliveries or payment, before you've cleared away the breakfast things.

So, lace up your sensible shoes. Pour the tea, break out a hob nob, straighten your elasticated waistband and let’s get to work.
