In this episode of Homeschool Conversations, I chat with Leilani Melendez—homeschooling mom of four, experienced teacher, and creator of Living with Eve. Leilani shares her personal journey of transitioning from the classroom to homeschooling, and how her perspective on education has shifted over the years.

With warmth and honesty, Leilani talks about homeschooling her daughter with Down syndrome, what it means to slow down and meet each child where they are, and how to build a faith-filled foundation for learning. She offers practical insights on adapting academic lessons, balancing therapies and appointments, and inviting siblings to play an active role in the learning process.

Leilani also emphasizes the importance of community and humility in the homeschool journey:

“We’re not meant to be by ourselves doing things on our own.”

If you’re considering homeschooling a child with special needs (or simply want encouragement to stay the course) this conversation will equip and inspire you.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Shifting from an academic-only mindset to whole-person education
  • Unique joys and challenges of homeschooling a child with Down syndrome
  • Practical ways to adapt lessons while keeping a biblical focus
  • Finding community and support in the homeschool journey
  • Encouragement for when homeschooling feels hard
